IU Dec 2023 - Six ways ASX can help you get ready to invest in 2024 - Blog tile

Many of us are familiar with the story of the Tortoise and the Hare from Aesop’s fables.  The theme of “slow and steady wins the race” is often used in conversation when talking about plans, goals, study, and investments.

Shared often in childhood, these kinds of stories were created for a reason; to embed in us behaviours - ideally good behaviours that we take throughout our lives into adulthood.

So, let’s think for a second about some of the behaviours that will help us reach our financial goals.

Firstly, it’s good practice to develop an investment plan. This includes considering the following investment principles:

  • Create clear and appropriate investment goals,
  • create an asset allocation that is consistent with your investment goals,
  • consider costs and minimise costs where possible, and
  • maintain perspective.

The “right” investments are the ones that are right for you, when taking into consideration your age, stage, investment goals, investment time horizon, and risk appetite. However, it can seem daunting to know where to start so we have provided here a summary of key ASX education services for first-time investors.

As we head into the yuletide period, with time to relax and have a break from the hurried nature of daily life, you may be thinking about your financial goals heading into 2024.

Here are six ASX resources that can help you get started on your investing journey.

1. ASX Online Courses

ASX online courses are a good introduction to, or refresher on, a wide variety of investments such as shares, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), Active ETFs, Derivatives, and Bonds.

ASX provides subjects that are suitable for beginners, the intermediate investor, and those who are more advanced in their investing journey. Delivered in succinct modules with short quizzes to reinforce learning, you’ll feel more equipped in your technical and practical knowledge as you work your way through these courses.

2. ASX Sharemarket Game

There are few safer places to experience the marketplace first-hand than with ASX’s Sharemarket Game. By participating in this low-risk learning experience, you can build up an understanding of how the sharemarket works, get familiar with stocks and sectors, and develop knowledge about risk and reward trade-offs. It's the perfect platform to test your investment strategies with simulated real market conditions, complete with actual prices and brokerage fees.

The Game runs twice every year and participants sign up to receive a virtual portfolio of $50,000 to invest in a range of ASX 200 shares, a selection of small- and mid-cap companies, as well as Exchange Traded Funds and Listed Investment Companies.

3. ASX Investor Day

This in-person event runs twice a year – in May and November – and is suitable for retail investors of all ages and stages of investing.

There is something for everyone, whether you are new to investing or a seasoned investor. The day starts with an economic update and panel discussion on themes from the update before breaking into two streams covering topics across a wide variety of asset classes, sectors and themes.

We close the afternoon with some fast-paced presentations pitching best ideas of stocks by key portfolio managers and a broker. Keep an eye on our Investor Day page to review on-demand videos from past events and for upcoming event dates in 2024.

4. ASX Investor Update newsletters
