ASX
There can be no question 2020 has been a challenging time for financial institutions and Australian companies generally. The short-term impact of the COVID-19 crisis has disrupted planned IPOs and product launches, and brought a record volume of capital raisings, supported by temporary relief from certain ASX rules.
The ASX share ownership and investor studies have been charting the evolution of share trading and investment in Australia since 1986. Yet few have been more revealing than the latest ASX Australian Investor 2020 Study, which combines findings from two, wide-ranging surveys taken immediately before and after the COVID-19 crisis hit. The latest study provides a unique snapshot of a critical moment in the history of our markets.
While the longer-term consequences of the crisis have yet to be seen, the study reveals there are some positive signs, with investors responding to the crisis by taking advantage of lower valuations to expand and diversify their portfolios.
There has also been an upsurge in investors entering the markets over the last few years, with more set to do so in the near future. These new investors are engaged, motivated and eager to learn. Many are also looking beyond the stocks traditionally popular with retail investors to a broader range of listed investments, including ETFs, LICs and IPOs.
Investors are looking for more information from companies in different formats like video content, to assist with decision making or to discuss with their advisers. They are using company annual reports, web sites and product disclosure statements when doing their research to make investment decisions. They also value trade shows and expos such as ASX’s CEO Connect program as a source of investment information.

ASX Research and Insights, ASX
The ASX Australian Investor Study 2020 builds on the ASX Australian Share Ownership Study, produced regularly since 1986, and its successor, the ASX Australian Investor Study 2017. Like the 2017 study, the scope of the 2020 research has been expanded from previous reports, to include the attitudes of Australians towards the full universe of available investment options.
